I am John, and I am Hung. I am American, and I am Vietnamese. Born and raised in America, I spent 80 days traveling through Vietnam with no money living along side Vietnamese farmers, fishermen, and people from all walks of life because I wanted so desperately to be Vietnamese. The incredible experience culminated in my book “John đi tìm Hùng” (John finding Hùng), which was a writing prompt in the 2013 National University entrance exam and has been enshrined into the Vietnam National Library.
I first came to Vietnam in 2010 on a UC Berkeley exchange program without being able to speak the language and knowing very little about the country. However, as I began to immerse myself and explore the culture, I fell in love. This was not only my motherland, but this was to be home.
Vietnam has allotted me the opportunity to do many of the things I’ve always wanted to do, such as, being a TV host, a college professor, an author and an entrepreneur. More importantly, it gave me a sense of purpose in life. I want to be an integral part of Vietnam’s development and guide the youth towards building a better Vietnam.
I will be blunt in this post since I mainly want to get across a few concepts, even if not in the most eloquent or “scientific” way. Man handles two categories of problems with two different mental systems. In “Thinking Fast and Slow”, the author Daniel Kahneman describes these […]

Man handles two categories of problems with two different mental systems. In “Thinking Fast and Slow”, the author Daniel Kahneman describes these systems as System 1 and System 2. System 1 is fast, automatic, intuitive. System 2 is deliberate and effortful. For example, when we react to a horrific image, we process this emotionally and with System 1. In contrast, when we solve a complex math problem, we use System 2. I’ll use this model to describe social adaptation. When I use that phrase, what I mean to say is how we handle social situations, social relations like a group of friends, meeting strangers, interacting with work colleagues or even how we interact with someone we encounter in the service sector like a waiter. By adaption I mean how we calibrate our behavior towards someone based on their appearance or how others treat them (their Social Rank).
During social encounters, System 1 is constantly making automatic deductions about how we should treat other people. We treat people differently based on what we see- their attractiveness, based on their height, based on their muscle mass, their body type, their race; but also what we hear- the tone of their voice, their accent, etc. I am positive that most of these automatic judgments are split-second, automatic and we are often not consciously aware of what we’re doing. Studies are clear that we treat people better or worse based on these factors such as attractiveness.
When you get into slightly more complex deductions, these are still relatively automatic. Take popularity. We notice who is ‘liked’ more by others; who is ‘listened to’. Without even knowing it, we become more favorably inclined towards such people, give them more respect, and are less likely to defy them or even disagree strenuously with them. Such is our adherence to the invisible social hierarchy that meant life or death when mankind was primarily organized by way of “the tribe”; today, social rank still matters but perhaps less importance than it ought to today (at least in measured by consequences of disobeying it). Our exaggerated adherence to it is somewhat anachronistic, an evolutionary holdover from an earlier era. Having said that, it is still a powerful reality.
Social adapation is taking these cues and acting on them – typically for personal advantage- to be included, to be liked, to have social power yourself, to avoid social consequence. We engage in these minute & subtle calculations everyday and most of it is subconscious.
What is the connection to race? Well I will try to make this quick because the point I think will be self-evident. In a society where whites control the culture, they control the TV shows we watch, the movies which represent our waking dreams; they write the fairytales we’re exposed to as children, they are the rock stars on our music dial. In a society where Asian men are depicted as asexual and weak and undesirable. Where whites are depicted as knights and heroes. Where blacks are just undesirables meant to be caught on a show like COPS. Where whites are taught to be proud of who they are, granted in ways that are not meant to be made overt or obvious but said in code – such as the emphasis on the “West” pulling humanity out of the jungle, and similarly the diminution of the contributions of other civilizations (notably Chinese civilization including the seafaring of Zheng He whose voyages preceded Western explorers). Where minorities are taught to be embarrassed of who they are and uncertain because they don’t always know the ‘unwritten rules’ that European-Americans have enshrined into the way of life in America. When whites can act with resentment towards minorities and get away with it because they hold positions of power or are in the majority, because they can easily bond with another white person in the vicinity in shared pride of who they are; but where a minority can be ‘frozen out’ of a group by whites for a social faux pas, and the others will look the other way. In short, in an environment that strongly benefits one race and penalizes another — our social adaptation – which simply functions on cause and effect, blind to extenuating circumstances (of white pride, white racial mistreatment of minorities, minority self-hatred, minority displacement of resentment on other minorities) and how they impact social interactions & group interactions – will draw errant conclusions. And because social adaption functions in System 1- and is automatic, often evading our conscious awareness, even our knowledge of subtle social racism may not impact the conclusions that System 1 draws when it sees a white male receiving more ‘liking’ from other people – if those other people are whites who have in-group racial favoritism and minorities who are ‘eager to please’ to whites. Nor will it correct when it sees an Asian male getting interrupted in a conversation for example, or an Asian male getting more looks of disdain- even if the person doing it, let’s say, is a white female who routinely shows contempt for men of color, and because of her privileged status (and white in-group cohesion) has gotten away with it.
In other words, the automatic mechanism of social adaption was NOT designed to work in a multi-racial environment with systemic social bias. It makes an implicit assumption that you have Inputs and Outputs and makes a deterministic relationship between the two; and then acts on those conclusions. “So and so is popular; I should befriend him”. “The group does not like that black male; I should keep him at arms’ length….unless the group shows him favor”. “That boy is well liked; maybe I should get to know him”. “Others looked away when that Asian male spoke; don’t be associated with him”. All of this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy; in other words, the existing social racism in society feeds on itself through the atomized, individual social adaptation mechanism which sees whites treated favorably and minorities less so. What is needed in this environment is for Racially Aware Minorities to Arrest the automatic behavior of System 1 in making social deductions and to replace this mechanistic process with a dose of idealism and reality. That is – how do we want to act? If we are on auto-pilot, the social deductions we make and act upon will REFLECT the racism of our environment. Is that what we want?? To fulfill an ideal where people are treated equally regardless of race, individuals need to overrule their automatic social judgment and instead determine social worth and individual worth based on objective factors such as: who is decent, who is honest, who is friendly – and DISCOUNT the automatic acceptance of social cues such as he who is most worthy is he who is mistreated least by the others.
Over the last 50 years, official racism has receded, “Unofficial” social racism is with us and has barely changed because there are virtually NO organizations to fight it; there is hardly any awareness, analysis of social racism EVEN in minority communities except in some vague and often unhelpful way such as “white privilege” which dwells FAR too much on the criminal justice system and economics as opposed to social dimensions.
Our social compass has guided man through millennia. It is hardwired. We want to draw close to popular people, towards people who are “respected”; we tend to ‘dislike’ those who are stepped on. But to not calibrate our social compass for the morally wrong and ultimately corrupt ‘racial social hierarchy’ in America is to ENDORSE it. See, the thing is: we all want to make social decisions which are adaptive, which give us benefit, which make us popular or at least acceptable; which avoid social pain and consequence. We don’t see each social interaction as our opportunity to introduce meritocracy, fairness, and equality into the social realm. But we should. In fact, we must – if the world is to change.
So I will lay out two phrases:
- Unguided Social Compass: a person who draws social conclusions automatically; and then accepts those conclusions as valid, regardless of underlying factors. Example: Jane (an Asian woman) thinks of Henry and Jason (Asian men) as losers because some number of whites they interact with look down on them. She sees Ben (white male) as desirable and “cool” because he doesn’t endure that same disrespect.
- Guided Social Compass: a person who injects their idealism into their navigation of the social environment; their acknowledgement that certain people may be treated better or worse, with more respect or less, not due to who they are, but based on WHAT they are (what race, but also what gender, etc.) and accounts for that in their perception. Accounting for these dimensions before deciding how to treat people, who to befriend, who to disregard, etc.Racial minorities are not exempt from this work to correct social instincts. In fact, legions of Asian Uncle Toms, Hispanic Uncle Toms, etc. are essential to maintaining the skewed racial social hierarchy; their willingness to accept the corrupted social verdicts and then act on them (ie: treat other minorities or even their own minority type as “less than” and get that big smile and eagerness to converse when a white person shows up) cements the hierarchy. With their being on auto-pilot to social deductions as to who matters and who doesn’t, the system receives a minority ‘stamp of approval’ and becomes normalized and acceptable to all else. After all, by accepting the warped ‘rules’ and acting on them, it is no longer a social injustice being “perpetrated” on anyone- but simply a ‘fact of life’ that people of all races embrace.
Ideally, all of society, including White America, will acknowledge the inequities caused by social racism – but as a starting point, minorities, especially minority women, need to acknowledge and be aware of how we set ourselves back when we internalize and even unwittingly endorse the corrupt racial social hierarchy. Automatic judgments are the ENEMY. A lack of introspection and derailing the conversation by invoking gender, by gaslighting, by making any excuse to follow one’s instinctual impulses stand in the way of progress. As politically incorrect as it may be to say, women are more likely to make these automatic judgments and more unwilling to examine their instinctual social conclusions. This is understandable as adherence to the social hierarchy carried with it greater consequences to women in yesteryear when our neural circuitry and social impulses formed. Therefore I say without question, it is even more vital for Women of Color to examine how they may award and withhold “social points” other people based on observed ‘popularity’ and preference by others that may actually be the result of the skewed racial hierarchy.
Whichever racial minority opportunistically puts their own social outcomes- their own popularity- their own social protection – their own social “getting ahead’ ahead of making fair, independents social assessments based on the reality of another’s character (not their skewed social rank as influenced by social racism) is an enemy of the growing minority coalition. It is a selfishness which needs to be called out and castigated. The fact is: it is EASY to play the game and accept the game’s corrupt rules. It is stress-free and perhaps beneficial. Thus, minorities must create equal and opposite consequences for minorities who are dismissive towards other minorities but eager to please with whites. Ultimately, solving this problem means being Aware of it; making social assessments a System 2 activity — and then acting in a way that is idealistic first (before self-interested social opportunism).
Ivy League Schools Discriminating Against Asians
It is an irony that many Ivy league schools today discriminate against Asian Americans when it comes to admission when most Ivy league schools were funded pretty much by money Americans took from China via the Opium trade. There is an ongoing lawsuit against Ivy league schools and their discrimination practices against Asian Americans.

British Empire Funded by Opium
Still, the real narco-republic in world history isn’t the United States, Mexico, Colombia or other transit points to the artificially created drug epidemic in the United States. This dubious honor actually goes to the British Empire, as their Bengal-to-China opium business during the time of Queen Victoria grew into the world’s largest commodity trade during the 19th century. Opium accounted for almost 20 percent of the Empire’s total revenue, yet opium was just the tip of the addictive trade.
In the United States and the British Empire addictive substances were the major business of British mercantilism. For example, the original British colonies like Jamestown and Virginia were economically unfeasible before the smoking of tobacco caught on in Europe and smoking and snuff created a cash crop from America.
Later, sugar from British Caribbean colonies was added to the British consumption of tea from China and the entire Empire became addicted to tea. But there was a problem. Unlike in the Americas where cotton and tobacco were traded for British manufactured goods, China simply said no to foreign imports.
Their leader, the Son of Heaven, wrote King George III in 1793: “We posses all things. I set no value on objects strange or ingenious, and have no use for your country’s manufactures.” Great Britain had addicted their entire population to the stimulation of tea and sugar but China surprisingly demanded silver as payment for the tea. This created a permanent drain of gold and silver from the British Empire to China and a gigantic balance of payments deficit resulted that threatened the future solvency of the British Empire. This situation is very similar to China’s holdings of US Treasury debt today.
Opium Trade was Big Business for Americans
He was not alone. Many of the wealthy New England families built their fortunes on slave and opium trading. In fact, most of the American Ivy League universities were funded to a great degree when dirty money from the slave and opium trade was washed and then use to build new reputations for these families.
For example, John Cleve Green donated much of his opium profits to Princeton University, Abiel Abbott Low used his opium fortune to finance the construction of Colombia University, John Murray Forbes financed the Bell Telephone Company, Joseph Coolidge’s son organized the United Fruit Company and his grandson was the founding executive officer of the Anglo-American Council on Foreign Relations. This is just the tip of the iceberg in showing how many among the power elite made their fortunes with the China opium trade.

When will Asians worldwide ever learn that by putting white people on billboard, magazines, advertisings etc. is the same as promoting white supremacy?
Does anyone think white people care about promoting people that aren’t white? Just look at any stuff coming out of Hollywood, it is all about promoting white men despite USA is a multicultural country with over 40%+ minorities. Asians worldwide need to promote their own beauties. The reality is most people worldwide don’t travel. All they have to do is stop by Disney World in Orlando is see what real life white people look it. Hint: They look nothing like Brad Pitt or Kendall Jenner.
Kendall Jenner being featured on the cover of Vogue India’s 10-year Anniversary issue has sparked outrage over the magazine’s failure to feature an actual Indian model. The backlash comes about a month after the supermodel half-sister of Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian, appeared in a Pepsi commercial that was […]

Many were angered over the Vogue India cover, which was shot by Italian photographer Mario Testino in India’s pink city, Jaipur, because it brings up another missed opportunity to celebrate women of color.
Vogue has garnered hundreds of negative comments after it posted the cover on Instagram, with many users criticizing the magazine for not hiring a local model.
“Yes, it’s pretty, but we’re not celebrating white/European beauty standards…we’re trying to celebrate Indian women of color,” 17-year-old Instagram user Sabrina Martinez wrote, adding that as a woman of color, she felt disappointed and hurt seeing the photo.
“It says that’s the beauty standard, it says that you can’t be the epitome of beauty if you’re not white. Even this magazine that’s supposed to be celebrating another culture, another type of beauty is not recognizing even what it’s supposed to be standing for.”

Lily Maymac is an Anglo-damaged minority. She is a Filipina living in Australia who mocks the fact that Asian men hit on her, is slavishly white-worshipping (laughably so to the point she is drooling over average white guys, boasting any time a white guy hits on her), desperately wishes she was half-white, attacks other races, and takes her BF for granted (says she’s with him because he’s rich) but talks openly of cheating on him with a white guy. Anglo-damage is evident.
THE QUALITY OF AN ASIAN’S PERSONALITY CAN BE CORRUPTED
This is a real phenomenon; the toll on a minority’s mind from negative conditioning against Asians in a white society. I use this term instead of mental colonization etc. because I’m referring here to a kind of derangement; not just a kind of self-hatred (and hatred towards other races; ie: her comments on Indians) but also a nastiness, a vileness, a general awfulness that seeps in and corrupts one’s character and personality entirely. What might have been a good, healthy person becomes a bad human being – in so many ways — absorbing the worst qualities of whites, and in a way amplifying them.
If you’ve seen a Before-After of medical imaging of the body before and after cancer, the visual is helpful to understand the toxic effect Anglo everyday racism has on the psyche of a susceptible minority.
What’s the case with Lily in the macro, I’ve seen in the micro so many times in terms of being Anglo-damaged. Simple example. I was at the doctor’s office the other day. Two nurses- one Indian woman, one white woman. The Indian woman begins polite and helpful. Then, I see her go into the main room. She makes some kind of mistake and a white doctor who had just walked in to that room laughs in a very loud, insulting way at her (you know how whites are- they laugh way too loud, too long- as a kind of insult). She laughs along, but obviously embarrassed and hurt. Thereafter, she is defensive and angry the entire time. Now imagine this happens 100x or 1000x. The nastiness takes a toll but becomes worse when that minority, perhaps like Lily, is led to believe that whites are superior- their phenotype is superior to her Asian one, that white models are the ones who get cast in movies, that they are ‘where the party is’. Slowly but surely, they become Anglo-damaged and exhibit the worst qualities of whites including the ones they suffered at the hands of. Sure enough this Indian woman was making an annoying condescending laugh during our appointment later on. Psychologists explain how those who are abused internalize the manner in which they were abused and act out against others.
WHAT’S HAPPENING ‘BEHIND THE CURTAIN’?
Without knowing, some of these AFs adopt the worst traits of whites, their racial biases (ie: white self-aggrandizement becomes white worship in the anglo-damaged AF), their nastiness, their desire to use other people (ie: her just dating someone who’s rich but happy to cheat on him). It’s an unfortunate aspect of human nature.
When racial dynamics are not ‘frozen’ and consciously examined, our subconscious mind has a hard time thinking ill of ‘bad behavior’ that is done by people who are perceived of as high status (ie: Anglo-damaged minorities initially think ill of a white who mistreats them but then they see the white person being treated well by others and assume it’s them who is wrong). We unknowingly emulate people we perceive as higher-status – which is why subordinates often mimic the behaviors and tendencies of their managers and senior mgrs. (What is odd is that for every one person who adopts lets say Steve Jobs innovative thinking, three who try to emulate Jobs will ONLY takeaway his harsh berating of subordinates as “being like Jobs”. People often model other people wrong- they take only the worst qualities- perhaps because those features are the most readily obvious and make the greatest impact on the limbic system- they are more easily recalled by way of ‘availability bias’)
I just have to reiterate that – without making all of this explicit- giving us a chance to examine and critique- the mind has a hard time absorbing all these social cues — from the life, from the media — and not leading to a mindset seen in Lily Maymac. The subconscious mind is the silent author of many of our attitudes, judgements, and life strategies ; it will just go off and do it’s thing unless the executive mind exerts a controlling influence over it.
Well-adjusted people are relaxed and confident. Insecure people are nasty, self-hating, snippy. Unfortunately, anglo-damage afflicts AF more so, perhaps due to greater emotional vulnerability & need to align with society (rather than stand apart from it). I believe this is not AF’s fault entirely; they are let down by their manipulable, asleep-at-the-wheel Asian parents and by a community that seems at times indifferent to the psychological ramifications of Asian children growing up in an environment that implies to them that they won’t “belong” if they ‘don’t get along with the program’.
I hope Lily comes to her senses. But even if she doesn’t, I think her racial confusion and nastiness is a window into the psychological damage Asians can suffer in a white-dominated society – it’s something only an aware community can stem and prevent in the next generations.
SIDE POINT: DEALING WITH NON-ASIAN MINORITIES WHO ARE ANGLO-DAMAGED
What’s a trip is when you live side-by-side with whites, sometimes you don’t know who’s worse non-Asian minorities or whites. One key reason for this is if you live in an area that has a high % of anglo-damaged minorities (see some elaboration on this here). A city with an Anglo-Germanic microculture or just Anglo micro-culture (ie: Northern Califoirnia; places in the South) will exhibit a large number of anglo-damaged minorities; who absorb several things from Anglos: the racial hierarchy (they will kiss up and kick down; in fact more so, because the disrespect they suffer from whites they will feel justified in displacing on Asians), the mannerisms (ie: being curt, dismissive, snarky;, status-conscious), as well as a screwed up value system (superficial and transactional, instead of genuine and mutualistic). Cities in general tend to have lower %’s of Anglo-damaged minorities than suburbs; Asian enclaves with a strong self-identity also undercuts this effect.
There are key distinctions between Anglo-damage and mental colonization and everyday Channery. Anglo-damaged people like Lily Maymac adopt the worst qualities of whites & develop a vileness to their personality (that might not otherwise have occurred had they been raised outside a white-dominated environment) ; mixed in with their learned self-hatred, hatred of other races, and extreme worship of white people.
